By use of the energy- equation for a typical polymerisation process, the reaction enthalpy and its rate during the process is evaluated with appreciable accuracy from a measurement of only a few temperatures and the mass flow of the monomer. Through the known enthalpy of polymerisation the course of the free monomer during the process can be determined and it is shown that these data are correlated with the viscosity of the final product as a function of the shear- rate. It is hoped that this correlation enables a control of the process towards a fixed viscosity shear- rate relation.
