Abstract
It is especially to characterize plastics and control their properties, that thermoanalytical methods continue to be used increasingly. The user is interested not only in the processability of the material, but also, particularly, in its mechanical properties as a function of temperature. These mechanical properties are for instance: expansion behaviour, also under pressure or under tensile load, bending strength, flow behaviour, softening temperature as a function of pressure, swelling behaviour under the influence of gases or liquids, and flexion of multi-component systems. Thermal analysis is used for these measurements, because, on account of the high resolution, it also allows investigations to be carried out on thin foils or very thin films of lacquer.
