Abstract

During thermogravimetric measurements disturbances due to convection effects on the crucible are often encountered. Thermogravimetric blank tests were made using different furnaces, crucibles, atmospheres, gas flow rates and temperatures in a Mettler thermoanalyzer TA 1. The observed force on the crucible could be related to the friction forces calculated from previously known formulae for laminar gas flow. The contribution from this force is most pronounced at high gas flow rates and at high temperatures.
