Abstract
The Aebtische Hof, also known as the Schetty House, was opposite the Church of St. Clare, and was the vicarage of ‘Little Basle’ (the part of the town on the right bank of the Rhine). It was rebuilt in 1765 by another celebrated city architect, J. J. Fechter, who was careful to preserve the harmonious relationship between the house and the church. Particularly effective was the balance between the big roof and the front of the house, and the long rows of windows. Considerable alterations were made to the original church of the Poor Clares or Minoresses in 1531, when the earthworks known as the Claraschanze were thrown up; among other things the old choir was demolished. Protestants and Roman Catholics shared the use of the church from 1798 to 1853, when it became exclusively Roman Catholic and was rebuilt by Amadeus Merian, the architect of the Drei Könige Hotel.
