Testing the analgesic activity of dipyrone in human subjects using an experimental pain model with tonic and phasic pain stimuli

New Pharmacological and Epidemiological Data in Analgesics Research

Abstract

The pain-alleviating property of dipyrone has been demonstrated in numerous studies [1]. However, only a small number of approaches try to establish the analgesic action of dipyrone quantitatively by means of experimental pain models [2][3][4]. Even the technique of pain-related evoked potentials, when employed in this field, yielded only unsatisfactory results (reviewed by [5]). It is quite conceivable that this is due to the fact that in most cases phasic painful stimuli were used without an actual inflammatory process being present. Under such conditions the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), in particular, are able to develop only a small part of their analgesic efficacy.
