Measurement of the Polarization Parameter in π^-p Elastic Scattering at 98, 237 and 291 MeV and in π^-p Charge Exchange Scattering at 237, 291 and 310 MeV Incident Pion Kinetic Energies

Abstract

The polarization parameters in π^-p elastic scattering at 98, 237 and 291 incident pion kinetic energies and in π^-p charge exchange scattering at 237, 291 and 310 MeV have been measured over a wide range of scattering angles with a butanol polarized proton target in the πM3 pion channel at SIN. The π^-p elastic scattering data have been used in energy independent phase shift analyses to improve the precision of the pion-nucleon phase shifts, while the charge exchange data have been used to set upper limits on isospin breaking in the pion-nucleon S waves.
