Zusammenfassung
Das Erscheinen des Menschen ist ein Markstein in der langsamen Entwicklung des Lebens. War dieses Ereignis unausweichlich, oder verdanken wir unsere Existenz einer Reihe von besonderen Umständen? Trifft das letztere zu, so sind wir wahrscheinlich die einzige intelligente Zivilisation im Universum. Jaques Monod ist dieser Meinung. In seinem Werk «Zufall und Notwendigkeit» schreibt er, daß «der Mensch letztendlich weiß, daß er allein ist in der gleichgültigen Unermeßlichkeit des Universums, aus dem er durch Zufall hervorgegangen ist». Es scheint heute klar, daß die Formen, die das Leben im Laufe seiner Evolution annimmt, und die Wege, die es begeht, hauptsächlich auf Zufälligkeiten beruhen, die außerhalb seiner Kontrolle liegen. Aber anstatt Monod sofort zuzustimmen, möchte ich zunächst die Katastrophen untersuchen, die diese Evolution kennzeichneten, und feststellen, ob sie eine bestimmende Rolle gespielt haben — ob sie wirklich den Verlauf des Lebens beeinflußt haben.
Es gibt den Zufall nur, weil menschliche Interessen mitbetroffen sind und weil die Dinge geschahen, als ob der Mensch mit in Betracht gezogen worden wäre.
