Der klassischen Mythologie zufolge überquerte die Prinzessin Dido auf der Flucht vor ihrem blutrünstigen Bruder Pygmalion, dem König von Tyros, mit einer Handvoll treuer Gefolgsleute das Mittelmeer und landete schließlich an der Küste von Nordafrika. In Vergils Aeneis lesen wir:
Hier erwarben sie Grund; sie nannten ihn Byrsa,
was soviel bedeutet wie Ochsenhaut; und sie kauften nur so viel,
wie eine Ochsenhaut umfassen kann.1
