Zusammenfassung
Schon seit längerer Zeit hat man erkannt, daß die im wesentlichen von DAHLQUIST [1] und HENRICI [2] geschaffene asymptotische2) Theorie der Diskretisierungsverfahren für Anfangswertaufgaben bei Systemen gewöhnlicher Differentialgleichungen die Verhältnisse bei größeren Schrittweiten gelegentlich auch qualitativ nicht mehr richtig wiedergibt. Es wurde deshalb der Begriff der absoluten Stabilität eines Diskretisierungsverfahrens eingeführt (vgl. z.B. [3] bis [7]) und im Zusammenhang damit der Bereich der absoluten Stabilität definiert, solche Bereiche sind für verschiedene Verfahren bestimmt worden, (z.B. [6] bis [9]). Verschiedentlich wurde auch eine relative Stabilität untersucht (vgl. z.B. [4], [5], [9], [10]), doch blieb die Definition dieses allgemeineren Begriffs unbefriedigend.
