Abstract
Linear expansion and dilatometric measurements illustrate the occurrence of a first order transition following the normal Tg at 75°C. The first order transition for polystyrene depends upon its thermal history and the way in which the polymer is synthesized. First order transitions usually occur in the range 90° to 120°C, and the occurrence of this first order transition is independent of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Depolarized light measurements have been used to illustrate the changes in the first order phenomenon of polystyrene for several commercial samples as well as isothermal crystallization behavior. Annealing for even short times at 85°C changes the depolarized light trace to indicate the fusion of a second type of morphology.
