Activation of the Swimmeret Rhythm by Stimulation of the Second Thoracic Roots

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Life Sciences ((ALS))

Summary

In the crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, the rhythmical activity of the swimmeret motor pattern is strongly modified by stimulating the second thoracic roots.

Stimulating the second thoracic roots modifies the activity of most swimmeret neurons. It increases the frequency of the rhythm and the frequency of spikes within cell bursts, also it increases the total amplitude of membrane potential oscillations of some swimmeret neurons.

The effects on the swimmeret rhythm by stimulating the second thoracic roots are established slowly and are of long duration.
