Summary

The primary structures and posttranslational modifications of the two major hydrophobic surfactant proteins have been determined by chemical means. They were found to be entirely different for the two molecules and presented special analytical problems. The solubility properties, the presence of extremely hydrophobic polypeptide segments, the existence of truncated forms, and the covalent linkage of fatty acids severely complicated ordinary analyses. This necessitated the use of modified methods.
