Summary

The data reported indicate that the expression of Mn-dependent superoxide dismutase is a (pre)-transcriptional event. Evidences obtained from several experimental systems, neoplastic and non neoplastic, suggest that manganese is involved in the control of MnSOD expression. The molecular mechanisms implicated could consist in the activation of a transcription factor sensitive to some reactive oxygen species, such as H2O2, whose production rate is enhanced by this metal.
