Zusammenfassung
Wer noch das Glück hatte, vor der Einführung der Mengenlehre im Mathematikunterricht zur Schule zu gehen, wird sich bestimmt an den Pythagoreischen Lehrsatz erinnern:
In einem rechtwinkeligen Dreieck ist die Summe der Quadrate über den beiden Katheten flächengleich dem Quadrat über der Hypotenuse:
Dieser Satz war bereits im Babylonien HAMMURABIS bekannt, vielleicht sogar schon in Ägypten, doch dürfte der erste Beweis aus der Schule der Pythagoreer stammen. Diese Gruppe von mathematisch interessierten Philosophen nannte sich so nach dem ziemlich mythischen Gründer, PYTHAGORAS (ca. 580 – 500 v. Chr.), der vermutlich Mystiker, Wissenschaftler und aristokratischer Politiker war. Er soll Babylonien und Ägypten bereist haben und später in Oberitalien (Kroton) einen Kreis begeisterter Jünger um sich versammelt haben, aus dem die Schule der Pythagoreer entstand. Die Historiker können heute nicht mehr herausfinden, welche Leistungen der Pythagoreer auf den Meister selbst zurückgehen und welche den Schülern zuzuschreiben sind.
