Abstract

Just as the control systems field owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Helton for introducingit to techniques that have enabled the development of H∞ control theory and several other sub-disciplines of control and optimization, the UCSD control community is tremendously indebted to Bill for beinga beacon of excellence in control theory and mathematics at UC San Diego and whose presence has facilitated the formation of the new control engineering program at UCSD in the late 1990s. Thank you Bill for always beinga thoughtful, constructive, and unselfish colleague and friend.
