Abstract

Architects strive to improve the comfort of building occupants with respect to daylight and views to the outside. The result is large vision areas in façades, but these can have excessive solar gains. Shading devices are a passive way to limit this effect rather than increase the use of air conditioning. External shading also provides a powerful visual statement. Architects are increasingly seeing external shading in a positive way so that it is becoming established in architectural expression.
