Heart failure with normal left ventricular ejection fraction (HFNEF)

Abstract

  • Symptoms [1] and/or signs [2, 3] of heart failure, and

  • Normal or mildly abnormal systolic LV-function (LV-EF > 50%), and

  • Evidence of diastolic dysfunction.

There is considerable ongoing discussion about the term diastolic heart failure [46], with some authors demanding that this diagnosis be reserved for cases where an abnormality of the intrinsic diastolic properties [4, 711] of the heart is present. This is defined [12, 13] by a slowed relaxation and/or a decreased compliance (increased LV stiffness) characterising diastolic dysfunction [12, 13].
