Abstract

In 1969 Butler published a work that would make history: “Age-ism: Another form of bigotry”, thus introducing into the gerontological debate the concern for detecting prejudices and stereotypes directed at older people. But there is no lack of data indicating that ageism is millennia old in Western society.

Then comes painful old age, which makes man not only unpleasant, but also ugly.

He is always surrounded by terrible worries about death and does not enjoy looking at the rays of the sun, but (lives) hated by children, dishonoured by women… thus a divinity imposed paralysing old age.

—Mimnermo de Colofón
