Strategic Agility in Dynamic Business Environments

Abstract

In this chapter, we develop a novel framework for analyzing strategic agility within firms. This framework is derived from previous literature, interpreting core dimensions composing the multifaceted construct of strategic agility. Thus, we present and discuss some cases related to firms that have adopted internal processes and routines that are in line with key theoretical underpinnings that emerged from the study of strategic agility.

We combine big multinationals (Wärtsilä, British American Tobacco, and Danieli Group) with smaller firms operating in traditional sectors (Codognotto, operating in logistics and transportation and bofrost* Italy, operating in frozen food delivery) with the aim of highlighting the transversality of strategic agility principles. All cases come from direct interviews made with first-line managers of the firms. The chapter starts with the definition of an analytical framework that has been used to analyze every single case.
