Abstract

Public lighting undoubtedly belongs among the fundamental areas that almost every local government (city or municipality) is responsible for. One of the first municipalities in Europe to replace inefficient and outdated lighting sources with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly LED light fixtures was the Slovak municipality of Košeca in 2009 [1]. A larger-scale replacement of old public lighting with LED lighting in Slovakia began a year later. Currently, in 2023, there are still approximately 150,000 light points that are not operated with LED light sources, which accounts for approximately 25% of the cities and municipalities, thus resulting in wastage of electrical energy. The content of the article focuses on the approach taken by the municipality of Ivanka pri Dunaji (a municipality located next to the capital city of Slovakia, Bratislava) in addressing the replacement of public lighting. It describes the process and steps undertaken by the municipality to tackle this issue.
