Abstract
This chapter discusses research on Chinese moral psychology in the context of engineering ethics education. Better understanding how Chinese engineering students and practitioners think about matters of right and wrong, behave, and why, helps to better conceive and teach engineering ethics. This chapter motivates that project, surveys work to date, and proposes directions for future research. For those responsible for the ethics education of Chinese engineering students, its main takeaways are that (1) the perceived natures of and relations between ethics and the law is different among Chinese and Western populations, such that these should be discussed, (2) discussing ethics in relation to engineering—even if done poorly/in an incompetent manner—is better than not discussing it at all, and (3) curricula geared towards global engineering ethics are more successful in achieving ethics-related learning outcomes than those based on traditional/Western paradigms, because of cultural differences.

- 1.
Throughout this chapter, “moral psychology” is used to denote descriptive, empirical research concerning how people think about matters of right and wrong, behave, and why, as opposed to merely theoretical or speculative accounts of moral cognition, and prescriptive ethics—concerned with how people should think about matters of right and wrong, behave, and why (Doris et al. 2017).
