Abstract
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) implemented a project to enhance metal tapping yokes and trolleys’ design for safe handling and transportation. The modification involved the removal of hydraulically equipped retractable platforms from trolleys’ decks and the introduction of a steel frame that is welded with tapping yokes’ bail to support hook pin movement with a single steel handle mechanically attached to the frame. This mechanical solution facilitates easy engagement and disengagement of the pot tending machine’s hook with the tapping yoke from the working floor level. This improvement is a permanent and reliable solution with a simple design, eliminating the need to access elevated levels. The initiative eliminated safety risks to operators when accessing elevated platforms, decreased maintenance costs, and provided an efficient and cost-effective solution. This paper details the initial challenges, the ineffective hydraulic system, and the successful implementation of the mechanical solution, which eliminated safety concerns and operational issues.
