Abstract
Alan Johnson arrived at the Department for Trade and Industry in the early evening for his first ministerial job: ‘waiting for me outside on that soft summer’s evening was my private secretary, a young rapscallion by the name of Simon Lancaster’ who was to usher him ‘into the closed order of ministerial life’.
