Abstract

This chapter introduces the usage and limitations of the Pearson and Strukturbericht notations for crystal structures.

There have been many authorities who have asserted that the basis of science lies in counting or measuring, i.e., in the use of mathematics. Neither counting nor measuring can however be the most fundamental processes in our study of the material universe – before you can do either to any purpose you must first select what you propose to count or measure, which presupposes a classification.

Notes

  1. 1.

Having been asked to leave his position at the Technische Hochschule Stuttgart (now the Universität Stuttgart) in 1933 due to pressure from its Nazi leadership, Ewald emigrated to England in 1937 and was therefore not involved with the editing of this volume. Hermann was later imprisoned by the Nazi regime for helping Jews hide and escape the Holocaust.

Review Questions

  1. 1.

The mineral perovskite, CaTiO3, forms in the primitive orthorhombic space group Pnma, with four formula units per unit cell (Z = 4). What would the Pearson symbol be for this compound?

  2. 2.

The mineral α-quartz, SiO2, forms in the trigonal space group, P3221, with three formula units per unit cell (Z = 3). What would the Pearson symbol be for this compound?

  3. 3.

Briefly explain why the Pearson notation should only be used for elemental solids and some binary compounds.
