Abstract

Though we have insisted in the pivotal rule played historically by the Calculus of Variations in the initial steps of Functional Analysis as a discipline on its own, it has grown to be an immense and fruitful field, crucial to many other areas of Mathematics and Science. In particular, Operator Theory is one of those fundamental parts of Functional Analysis that we briefly treat in the following two chapters.
