Abstract

In which we learn to evaluate arthritis, determine if it infectious, inflammatory, or degenerative and we learn the key imaging findings. In approaching a joint centered process or arthritis, we first need to localize the abnormality to within the joint. Once this is done, there is a limited number of entities possible.

The most common is degenerative osteoarthritis.

The inflammatory arthropathies are divided between rheumatoid or rheumatoid factor positive arthritis and the sero-negative inflammatory arthropathies: ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic, reactive, and enteropathic.

Deposition arthritis, usually in the form of gout or CPPD arthropathy are common and often discretely recognizable.

Finally, joint centered proliferative processes are discussed. These are rare but encountered entities, each of which usually has distinct imaging characteristics.
