Abstract

Evaluating orthopedic hardware is a common and daily occurrence. Hardware comes in many shapes, sizes, and forms. It is not necessary to know the name of each individual hardware, but you should understand the general types of hardware, the functional purpose of the hardware, and common manifestations of failure and complication of the hardware.

Common hardware complications are infection, loosening, wear, fracture, and migration.

Imaging hardware has many complications and pitfalls, which are often associated with the artifacts present with CT and MRI.

We discuss the different imaging modalities and the drawbacks and strengths in each as regard to evaluation with hardware.
