Zusammenfassung

Das Kapitel gibt einen Überblick über das aquatische Ökosystem als Ganzes. Das aquatische Ökosystem wird anhand verschiedener Kriterien klassifiziert: Tiefe, Wasserfluss, Salzgehalt und besondere Merkmale. Die Organismen innerhalb der aquatischen Umgebung werden ebenfalls beschrieben; dazu gehören Algen, Wasserpflanzen und Tiere. Dabei werden auch einige aktuelle Probleme, die die aquatische Umwelt betreffen, diskutiert. Einige der hier beschriebenen Begriffe werden in anderen Kapiteln des Buches verwendet; daher dient dieses Kapitel auch als Referenzpunkt für den Rest des Buches. Das Kapitel enthält auch Illustrationen und Bilder einiger aquatischer Ökosysteme aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt.
