Lumbar Spine Access Surgery

Abstract

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a complex patient care collaboration between surgical and imaging experts. Proper patient evaluation hinges on careful imaging review, principally plain x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Metrics associated with anatomic features present on MRI facilitate case planning; skin-to-spine depth (D), retrovascular fat plain involvement (I), and vascular free window (V) comprise the DIV criteria. Attention to these patient characteristics enable access surgeons to prepare for each anatomic challenge prior to entering the operating room.
