Lumbar Spine Access Surgery

Abstract

The anterior approach to the lumbar spine is commonly utilized for anterior spinal procedures and is associated with unique risks and benefits compared to other approaches. As the medicolegal and training environments change over time, it has become more commonplace for a spinal surgeon to utilize the assistance of an “access” surgeon who is often a general or vascular surgeon by training. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the anterior approach and potential complications, with specific attention paid to whether the approach is performed by a spine surgeon or access surgeon, and trends in exposure to this approach during orthopedic or neurosurgical residency.
