Preoperative Considerations for Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Revision

Lumbar Spine Access Surgery

Abstract

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is a commonly used procedure to achieve arthrodesis and has the benefits of excellent visualization of the anterior column, thorough disc space preparation, and a large surface area for cage placement. An anterior approach also avoids extensive posterior dissection and limits the risk of injury to the neural elements. A revision surgery may be necessary in patients who experience painful pseudarthrosis, recurrent symptoms, or adjacent-level disease. This chapter will discuss the critical aspects of planning a revision anterior surgery including patient evaluation, diagnostic testing, preoperative procedures, and approach-specific considerations.
