Abstract

Surgical exposures for spine surgery are conducted through a variety of incisions and approaches and are subject to complications. Wound complications for common surgical exposures of the spine can occur in the early postoperative period, such as surgical site infection and wound dehiscence, or they can occur later as hernias and rectus muscle atrophy. Careful surgical technique and patient selection can reduce these complications. The purpose of this chapter is to review specific complications associated with surgical wounds and how to mitigate occurrence risk.
