Abstract
Patients undergoing complex spine surgery present many anesthetic challenges and modern anesthesia techniques have been developed to minimize side effects, opioid use, and medication tolerance. The purpose of this chapter is to review developments including enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, adjunctive analgesia methods including multimodal oral and pain medication regimens, and regional anesthesia techniques such as the transversus abdominus plane, erector spinae plane, and quadratus lumborum blocks. With a thorough understanding of supplementary analgesia techniques, surgical providers may better control perioperative pain in a safe and effective manner and minimize patient morbidity.
