Surgical Management of Knee Arthritis

Abstract

Cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has seen a recent resurgence for many potential reasons, including ease of implantation, decreased surgical times, preservation of bone stock, decreased risk of third body wear derived from cement particles, and for osseointegration that may enable durable long-term fixation. Although many early cementless TKA designs failed for a multitude of reasons, contemporary designs have addressed historical problems and have demonstrated promising early- to mid-term outcomes to date. With increasing numbers of TKA being performed, including for the young, active, high demand patient amidst evolving technologies for their implantation, ongoing and future studies will clarify the most suitable role for and true value of the cementless TKA construct.
