An Emergency Physician’s Path

Abstract

Journal club (JC) is an honored tradition in all residency training programs. However, many would agree that there are challenges associated with conducting a successful JC that promotes active participation from all levels of trainees and faculty. We aim to provide a guide to help lead a more successful JC for both individuals and emergency medicine residency programs. The first (and most important) step is preparation, which starts with determining the goals of JC. These goals help guide presenter and topic/article selection, as well as number of articles selected. Guidelines for JC leaders and critical appraisal tools for participants are essential to hold learners accountable and promote participation. Recommendations are provided for implementation of a successful JC, including setting, frequency, length of time, and general rules. Establishing rules of engagement or rather very clear expectations of both presenters and participants is critical for JC success. Lastly, we will discuss some innovations that can help invigorate your JC.
