Abstract
Addiction Medicine is a relatively new subspecialty in Emergency Medicine (EM), officially recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in 2015. Since then, addiction medicine has been growing in popularity and increasing in fellowships around the country. There are many reasons why one should choose to subspecialize in addiction medicine. In this chapter, we will discuss a brief overview in the history of addiction medicine and how it has evolved into becoming its own subspecialty. Next, it is discussed why one would want to consider working in addiction medicine. Many of the opportunities in addiction medicine are wide and varied and why you would want to choose this field of work are covered. There are possibilities of still working in the hospital, in an outpatient setting, as a consultant from home either remotely on zoom or traveling to locations or both. There are personal, professional, and financial benefits to addiction medicine introduced in this chapter. Lastly, the two paths to achieve board certification in addiction medicine are addressed.
