Abstract
A small number of residency programs combine training in emergency medicine with internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, or anesthesiology. Like the more widely known “med-peds” (internal medicine/pediatrics) combined residency option, these longer dual training programs allow physicians to complete all the requirements to become board-certified in both emergency medicine and a second independent specialty. For the right candidate, these programs can provide unique opportunities and allow them to incorporate a love of multiple fields into their career. This chapter summarizes general considerations for students interested in combined residency training and describes the types of programs that are currently available.
