Abstract
Quality and patient safety (QPS) are academic niches for emergency physicians. A QPS focus can lead to opportunities in education and curriculum development for undergraduate and graduate medical education, as well as department, hospital, and healthcare system leadership. The key for academic emergency physicians using QPS as their calling is to build a legacy of academic work and publications to meet medical school promotion criteria. There are opportunities for QPS leadership in many other facets of the healthcare industry if a physician decides to pivot into the pharmaceutical, device, technological, or other healthcare-related business outside of clinical practice.
