Abstract
The AMA Code of Ethics notes that there is an expectation for physicians to participate broadly in healthcare leadership. Additionally, hospitals run by physicians have been found to have up to 25% better performance on quality metrics than those run by non-physician administrators. Unfortunately, over the past few decades, physicians have largely abandoned top-level leadership positions within healthcare. Throughout this chapter, we will discuss some core elements of leadership, departmental leadership, transitioning a career into administration, and hospital administrative roles typically held by physicians.
