Abstract
This chapter serves as a guide for making yourself a competitive candidate to match into the emergency medicine (EM) residency of your choice. With application season starting early in your fourth year, you have about 3 years to explore the field and build your network before putting your application together. Through diligent planning and a strong network of mentors, you will be well positioned heading into the application season. It all starts with a solid foundation of medical knowledge gained during your preclinical years. Balance your studies with opportunities to explore EM. During your third and fourth years, soak in everything from your clinical rotations because it is almost all applicable to EM. Ace your board exams. Be a star on your EM rotations as these are arguably the most important part of your residency application. Find research projects that you are passionate about and get involved in national EM organizations. Throughout your 4 years, build a network of EM mentors and advisors who will guide you into a fulfilling career as an emergency physician.
