Abstract

Wilderness Medicine is a growing field of practicing therapeutic modalities in natural, resource-poor environments. There are an increasing number of Wilderness Medicine fellowship opportunities in multiple locales throughout the United States open to Emergency Medicine residency graduates. Here, the authors discuss the role of physicians in Wilderness Medicine scenarios and provide examples of wilderness activities that can occur simultaneously with residency training. They detail potential reasons for partaking in a GME fellowship year, even though the extra year does not result in any additional board certification. Lastly, the history of Wilderness Medicine GME fellowships and the application process is explained. Completion of this chapter is the first step to securing an incredible year full of wilderness adventure and personalized mentorship.
