An Emergency Physician’s Path

Abstract

The field previously known to many as Women’s Health has evolved into Sex- and Gender-Based Medicine (SGBM), as researchers and physicians have realized that sex and gender differences extend far beyond reproductive health. In fact, both biological sex and sociocultural gender have profound impacts on the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute disease, positioning Emergency Physicians (EPs) to be leaders in this rapidly expanding field. Advanced training in SGBM opens doors to EPs to advance research, education, and policy in this arena. Here we will briefly discuss the history of SGBM, profile several leaders in the field with varied areas of expertise and practice, and provide practical guidance on how to get involved and become a successful fellowship applicant.
