Abstract

Population health and social emergency medicine is a relatively new specialty that is rapidly gaining momentum as the COVID-19 pandemic and protests following the death of George Floyd have shone a spotlight on health disparities. The author discusses the history of this growing specialty, defines its breadth of terminology, and reviews the key considerations in choosing a fellowship. There are currently about ten fellowships offered in social emergency medicine, population health, and related areas. These fellowships vary in their length (1 versus 2 years), scope, and advanced degree offerings. Some are more focused on research while others on community outreach and specific areas such as minority health and street medicine. The Master of Public Health is the most common advanced degree offered, other examples include a Master of Health Science Research or a Master of Policy Administration. More residencies have started offering educational opportunities through social medicine and related concentrations and tracks.
