Abstract

The question of whether or not to pursue a medical education fellowship is really two questions: (1) Do you want a career in academic medicine? (2) Is it necessary or beneficial for you to receive fellowship training in medical education to have a successful career in academic medicine? Inspired by the desire to be intellectually stimulated and create fulfilling relationships with those who have similar goals and interests, physicians often choose careers in academics to educate the next generation and conduct research. Medical education fellowships can help an aspiring academician by exposing them to the breadth of the world of medical education, providing the time and resources to explore a niche and complete scholarly work, allowing them to network and receive mentorship, and often allowing them to pursue an advanced degree in education.
