Abstract
Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) is a relatively new specialty in Emergency Medicine that grew in response to an aging population and seeks to incorporate the best practices of Geriatrics into the Emergency Department (ED) setting. Reasons for pursuing GEM include diversity in career opportunities, applicability to all EM physicians, “whole person” patient-centered approach to medical care, and a close community of like-minded clinicians. Experts in GEM may arrive to the specialty by different paths. Currently the most straightforward path is completion of a 1–2 year GEM fellowship. However, as there are less than ten dedicated GEM fellowships in North America, other options can include Research, Administration, or Medical Education fellowships with a special focus in geriatrics. The ideal GEM candidate is a self-directed individual with enthusiasm for changing how we do things and passion for improving the care for older adults, often demonstrated on a curriculum vitae by quality improvement projects, educational activities, leadership positions, and/or research opportunities. Look for mentors nationwide to guide and to develop your interests.
