Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics and paraprobiotics in sustainable diets, highlighting their potential to promote human health while minimizing environmental impact. Sustainable diets are essential for addressing the challenges of global population growth and food system sustainability. Prebiotics are indigestible dietary components that particularly stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the stomach, while probiotics, live microorganisms, confer health benefits. Prebiotics and probiotics combined, or “synbiotics,” have synergistic benefits. Concept of paraprobiotics and postbiotics, also explained in the present chapter. Incorporating these elements in sustainable diets can enhance gut health, nutrient absorption, and immune function, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Furthermore, this approach contributes to reducing food waste, improving resource efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact. In conclusion, adopting a holistic approach that combines prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics and para probiotic within sustainable diets holds promise for maximizing human health outcomes while concurrently reducing the environmental impact of food production. To facilitate the widespread implementation of this approach and its integration into sustainable food systems, it is imperative to foster continued research and encourage collaboration among the scientific community, policymakers, and stakeholders in the food industry.
