Penetrating Trauma

Abstract

Traumatic injury accounts for approximately 37 million emergency department visits each year in the USA. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 15% of trauma patients require emergency surgery. Injuries—both unintentional and violence related—take the lives of 4.4 million people around the world each year and constitute nearly 8% of all deaths, making trauma a major cause of mortality throughout the world. For people aged 5–29 years, the three of the top causes of death are injury related, namely, traffic accidents, homicide, and suicide. Major advances have been made in the care of trauma patients, including pain management. In the trauma setting, common surgical emergencies include orthopedic, vascular, intra- and extracranial, brain, soft tissue, skin, burns, massive abdominal hemorrhage, perforated abdominal viscous, and gastrointestinal and rectal bleeding.
