Pearls and Pitfalls in Skin Ulcer Management

Abstract

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) promotes healing, and its use in wound dehiscence, surgical site infections, or complications is widely accepted and applied. As in other medicine areas, nowadays the trend is not only to treat the patient but also to prevent complications. In this line and taking into consideration the NPWT benefits on the healing process, its applications have been expanded. It is nowadays used in diabetic foot, prophylactic use on incisional scars in high-risk non-healing areas, in acral areas of the body, or in case of venous insufficiency during flap reconstruction. Other lines of treatment such as burn treatment or infected breast prostheses are open, but there is still not enough evidence to implement their use.
