Abstract
The name “vulnology” is derived from Arcagatus, a protophysician of Greek origin who worked in Rome. The name was created to give dignity and independence to the science that deals with the treatment of chronic and non-chronic skin lesions. This discipline has its roots in mythology and has crossed the entire history of the “ars medica.” The presence of a skin lesion, also defined as “plague,” has cultural, psychological, and sometimes even religious implications that are absolutely unique compared with other pathologies. In the chapter, all these aspects are examined in order to highlight how this part of medicine has its own importance in the origin of medical knowledge.
