Zusammenfassung

Mit der zunehmenden Globalisierung der Psychologie und verwandter Felder sind Familie und Kultur zentrale Themen. Dieses Kapitel konzentriert sich auf die Gestaltung, Prüfung und Interpretation kulturell basierter Darstellungen von Familienbeziehungen und deren Auswirkungen auf individuelle und soziale Interaktionen. Insbesondere in kollektivistischen Kulturen wird die Stärke dieser Behauptung vorangetrieben, wenn über 80 % der Mexikaner der Aussage zustimmen, dass „man seiner Familie immer treu sein sollte“. Diese Aussage ist nur eine der 123 historisch-soziokulturellen Prämissen der mexikanischen Familie. Eine Beschreibung der in Mexiko durchgeführten Forschung über die Familie, ihre Struktur und Zusammensetzung sowie ihre Dynamik und Auswirkungen wird vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus ist das Funktionieren der Familie ein Prozess, der das Individuum, die Familie und die Kultur einbezieht. Um die allgemeine Wahrnehmung des Funktionierens der Familie zu bewerten, wurde in zwei Stufen eine Skala entwickelt. Eine Studie, basierend auf offenen Fragen, wurde durchgeführt, um zu erfahren, wie Mexikaner ihre Familienbeziehungen wahrnehmen. Basierend auf der explorativen Phase wurde ein objektiver Fragebogen entwickelt. Die psychometrische Bewertung des Maßes ergibt 45 Elemente, die in 4 Faktoren gruppiert sind: positive familiäre Umgebung, Feindseligkeit/Vermeidung von Konflikten, Kontrolle/Probleme bei der Gefühlsäußerung und Zusammenhalt/Regeln. Daten über die Auswirkungen von Sozialisationspraktiken auf das Funktionieren der Familie, die Vermittlerrolle dieses Funktionierens auf individuelles und Gruppenwohlbefinden sowie die Beziehung von Familienvariablen zu anderen psychologischen Phänomenen werden für die mexikanische Kultur vorgestellt.
